undying hair_WIP

undying hair_ is an ongoing project where I am exploring hair as a statement of beauty and appropriation. I want to take the hair out of the head and give it its own meaning.

Hair has divided and united humans across all cultures, countries, religion, tradition, genders and body parts.

Obsessively collecting images of all the designers, artists, sculptors, photographers and hair stylists who explored hair in their own way.

textures and surfaces

I used magazine cutouts, played with layouts and used different kinds of hair and placed it with images and text. I used old vinyl covers and fabric swatches to give a tactile feeling to the hair. I sewed hair on gloves, stitched braided hair on silk and muslin with a red thread passing through.

mood and colours

Story of a brunette, a red and a blonde, braided, curly and straight hair.

on a men's jacket

I combined the organic, unruly nature of hair and placed it on a crisp men's jacket as a detail on the collar, on the pocket, etc. Instead of just placing hair as a decorative element, I constructed a toile and used hair panel as the back panel.

intepreting real conversations about hair

surreal figures

I spoke to women of different backgrounds, age groups and in different phases of their lives. I photographed them in their natural skin and hair. I collaged these women together to create new intertwined characters.

off-cast

What meaning does the hair hold when it is taken off from the body?  What are the politics, myths and beauty standards about a lifeless body part? If we didn't have hair, we would all just be bald, no?

Installation at the Brick Lane Gallery, from 13th - 15th September, 2019.
